(And finally get more out of one simple resource)
Do you know that feeling when you download a template, use it once, and then… it just sits in your folder?
We’ve all been there.
A puzzle piece template is one of those classroom tools that can be reused all year — from writing and math to SEL, and We All Fit Together classroom displays.
Very often, we get a great template and only think of one activity to use with it. We forget how many different lessons we could actually create from a single resource. And honestly, if we had those ideas ready, it would save us so much time and money.
But once we’re in the midst of real classroom life — planning, managing behavior, attending meetings, and administering assessments — it’s hard to stop and think outside the box.
So today, I want to share simple, classroom-tested ideas you can easily implement using a puzzle piece template. These activities work especially well for:
- student engagement
- back-to-school and community building
- meaningful wall displays
- art centers and cross-curricular lessons
And yes — they’re low prep.
Teacher tip for displays:
If you plan to create a “We All Fit Together” classroom display, divide your class in half:
- Half use the puzzle piece in portrait
- Half in landscape
This small step makes a huge difference when assembling the final puzzle on the wall.
1. Back from Holidays Writing Activity (Puzzle Piece Template)

(Great for back-to-school or returning from breaks)
Give each student a puzzle piece template and ask them to divide it into 6 sections.
In each section, students respond to a prompt, for example:
- This is me (self-portrait)
- I ate…
- My favorite moment…
- I went to…
- I spent time with…
- I felt…
You can easily adapt the prompts depending on your grade level or writing goals.
2. Lines of Symmetry with a Puzzle Piece Template (Math + Art)

This is a favorite for combining math and abstract art.
Steps:
- Students divide the puzzle piece exactly in the middle
- On one side, they create an abstract composition using lines and shapes
- They mirror the design on the other side
- Color both sides symmetrically
This works beautifully when teaching:
- lines of symmetry
- reflection
- visual balance
And the finished display looks amazing.
3. “My Puzzle” Name Art (Puzzle Piece Craft Template)
Give each student one puzzle piece and ask them to:
- Write their name in the center
- Create a background design around it
Students can choose:
- abstract patterns
- landscapes
- shapes and lines
- anything their imagination allows
This activity is simple but powerful. Each student creates a unique piece, and together they form a strong class identity display.
4. All About Me Puzzle Pieces (We All Fit Together Classroom Display)

(Perfect for beginning-of-the-year activities)
Write prompts on the board, such as:
- name
- favorite color
- favorite book
- birthday
- family members
- favorite sport
- favorite food
- What they like to do in their free time
Students can:
- write and draw
- only draw
- or focus more on writing, depending on the skills you want to practice
This activity is excellent for a “We All Fit Together” classroom display and helps students learn about one another in a meaningful way.
5. “I Am Thankful For” – Thanksgiving Puzzle Piece Activity

Depending on your students’ level, you can ask them to:
- write
- draw
- or do both
Set a minimum (for example, 3 things they are thankful for).
I also recommend guiding students to think about meaningful gratitude — like family, friends, school, or experiences — because there’s always that one student who will list only toys.
This puzzle piece template works beautifully for Thanksgiving displays and SEL discussions.
6. End of the Year Reflection Puzzle (Puzzle Piece Template Activity)
This works wonderfully for:
- end of the school year
- Christmas / winter break
- New Year reflections
Students can reflect on:
- something they are thankful for from this year
- something they are proud of
- what they want to improve next year
Examples:
- “I want to be better at math.”
- “I want to learn how to…”
- “Next year, I hope to…”
It’s a simple way to support reflection, goal-setting, and a growth mindset.
7. We All Fit Together Puzzle Activity (Collaborative Kindness Puzzle template)

This activity comes from my Collaborative Kindness Puzzle resource and is one of my favorites for building classroom community.
Give each student one puzzle piece and ask them to:
- write or draw a kind action
- a kind word
- or something they can do to make the classroom a better place
Depending on the grade level, prompts can include:
- “One way I can show kindness is…”
- “Kindness looks like…”
- “I feel included when…”
- “I can help my classmates by…”
Students decorate their puzzle pieces, and once everyone is finished, you assemble the pieces into one large collaborative puzzle.
This activity works especially well for:
- beginning of the school year
- World Kindness Day
- SEL lessons
- class meetings
- resetting classroom culture after breaks
👉 What students learn:
- empathy
- responsibility
- belonging
- the idea that everyone matters
And visually, it makes a powerful “We All Fit Together” classroom display that students feel proud of because they created it together.
Final Thought
The magic of a good puzzle piece template is this:
The template stays the same — the purpose changes.
When we start thinking this way, one resource can become:
- an art lesson
- a writing activity
- a math connection
- a SEL moment
- a classroom display
And that’s how we save time, reduce planning fatigue, and still give students meaningful experiences.
Want to save planning time?
All of the activities shared in this post were created using the same puzzle piece template, which means you don’t need a new resource for every lesson.
Both resources work together to create engaging We All Fit Together classroom displays with minimal prep using the same puzzle piece template.
